Accel Entertainment Slapped with $5 Million Fine in Illinois Gaming Dispute

The Illinois Gaming Commission has levied a substantial $5 million penalty against Accel Entertainment, a prominent entity in the video gaming industry. They are alleged to have engaged in a dubious arrangement with DraftKings, the fantasy sports and wagering behemoth, to essentially incentivize establishments to install a greater number of Accel’s gaming terminals.

The crux of the matter is that Accel purportedly disbursed $21,000 in these covert payments, a clear violation of Illinois statutes. The state explicitly forbids any form of remuneration linked to generating increased gambling activity. To illustrate Accel’s extensive presence, they manage nearly one-third of all gaming machines throughout the state.

The mechanics of this alleged scheme involved Accel pledging to prominently display DraftKings advertisements across their machines. In exchange, DraftKings would provide $200 for each new patron Accel directed to register on their sports betting platform. Furthermore, Accel could then enhance the arrangement by distributing a portion of these funds to the businesses hosting the machines.

The Gaming Commission is taking a firm stance, issuing an eight-page complaint against Accel, essentially accusing them of attempting to secure a larger customer base through illicit means.

Accel, predictably, is disputing the allegations. Their CEO, Andrew Rubenstein, maintains their innocence and vows to vigorously contest the charges. He asserts that both entities are fully cognizant of the regulations and would not jeopardize their standing.

Accel’s legal representation echoes this sentiment, underscoring their dedication to operating within the bounds of the law. The outcome of this high-stakes gaming dispute remains to be seen.
