The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau instructed casinos to cut their workforce by 90% as the area combats its most severe COVID-19 surge since the pandemic’s start. This order, part of a broader initiative to briefly decrease casino activities by 10%, will leave a substantial number of employees without work.
Although designed as a short-term solution to limit infections, the consequences for Macau’s casino personnel and administration are significant. According to local sources, this reduction will initially occur between July 1st and July 8th, 2022, but it may be prolonged if the COVID situation deteriorates.
While not officially verified by officials, a formal statement is anticipated shortly. This development follows Macau’s removal of the requirement for construction and casino workers to submit negative nucleic acid test results every 48 hours. Employees will now be required to present rapid antigen test results, a far more straightforward procedure. This adjustment was driven by logistical issues and congestion at testing facilities caused by the large number of employees requiring regular testing.
By the conclusion of June 30th, 2022, Macau experienced a minor increase in COVID infections, with 66 fresh cases raising the cumulative number of infections to 638 since the commencement of the global outbreak.
