Sports Events in UK Postponed Following Queen Elizabeth II’s Death

In the wake of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, athletic events across the United Kingdom have been put on hold.

The English Premier League, along with other significant British sports organizations, have declared that no games or contests will occur this weekend as a gesture of reverence for the Queen’s passing.

Premier League teams assembled this morning to deliberate on this weekend’s schedules, and all groups agreed to delay all matches, encompassing Monday night’s contest between Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, as a sign of respect.

The Queen passed away yesterday (September 8) at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, following a reign spanning 70 years.

“We, together with our clubs, aim to honor Her Majesty’s lengthy and steadfast service to our nation,” stated Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters. “As our longest-ruling monarch, she has served as an inspiration to us all and leaves behind a truly remarkable legacy following a lifetime of dedication.

“This is a period of profound sorrow for our nation and for countless individuals worldwide who held her in high regard, and we join everyone in mourning her passing.”

The English Football League, encompassing the three divisions beneath the Premier League, has also declared the postponement of all scheduled matches today and throughout this weekend.

The Irish Football Association has also declared that all soccer games in Northern Ireland this weekend will be postponed.

Several UEFA Europa League matches were held last night, just before the news of the Queen’s passing was made public.

The British Horseracing Authority earlier today called off all races for today and tomorrow, but racing will resume on September 11.

The cricket Test match between England and South Africa at The Oval in London, today’s play was called off, while the second day of the London Golf Open near Wentworth will also be canceled.

The Tour of Britain cycling race has canceled its final three stages in Gloucestershire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.

In rugby union, the Premiership Rugby Cup match between Northampton Saints and Saracens scheduled for last night was canceled, but decisions on other matches this weekend have not yet been made.
