The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is strongly encouraging the government to endorse a proposal that would make single-game sports wagering legal.
BCLC is requesting the government to pass the Single-Event Betting Amendment Act, which was presented in the Canadian House of Representatives last November. This proposal aims to modify Section 207(4)(b) of the Criminal Code to authorize betting on individual sporting events or contests.
At present, Canadian criminal law only permits consumers to wager on at least three games or more, indicating that placing a bet on a single game or event is unlawful.
However, backing for single-game sports betting has been increasing in recent years. BCLC has previously expressed its support for legalizing this type of wagering, and media company Score Media and Gaming (theScore) has also voiced its approval.
“Our patrons have been desiring to place single-game sports wagers for a considerable period,” stated Stuart Grumettis, BCLC’s Director of Electronic Gaming. “For instance, this weekend is the Super Bowl, and our patrons want to be able to simply bet on the victor, but under current law they are unable to do so.”
